GARIP

PERFORMANCE

Marcat Dance company (ES)

Choreography by Mario Bermudez Gil (ES)

Duration: 30 minutes

Garip was first created and performed as a ten-minute trio in 2019 and received First Prize in Choreography from Burgos-New York International Choreography Contest. Building upon the demand of this piece,  Choreographer Mario Bermudez Gil used his ACASA residency to extend the 10 minute piece into a 30 minute half-evening length work. Garip is a wild, fanatical trio whose characters become a tribe of the same shadow.  The three dancers play with character overshadowing, shading, and tracking closely and secretly someone’s footsteps. At times the entity becomes fully enveloped in shadow, and at times the audience is provoked to see that there is no shadow without the potency and power of light.

Marcat Dance is a Spain-based international contemporary dance company led by Spanish Choreographer Mario Bermudez Gil and American co-founder Catherine Coury. Marcat Dance believes in the power of the imagination, creative risk-taking, and continuous research towards dynamic physicality. Since its founding in 2016, the company has performed and taught its growing repertory across the Middle East, Europe, Asia, and America including Festival Italica (Spain), Jacob’s Pillow (USA), Festival Prisma (Panama), Vanguard Body (China), and Inbal Theater (Israel) in addition to creating new works on the National Dance Company of Spain, National Dance Company of Wales, Flamenco Star Eva Yerbabuena, Scapino Ballet Rotterdam, Hung Dance Taiwan, and Nuovo Balleto di Toscana.  Marcat Dance is the recipient of First Prize in Choreography from multiple prestigious European international competitions.
